Masculinit(ies) of Holy Roman rulers of the 14th century
This habilitation project examines the enactment of masculinity among Holy Roman rulers between 1273 and 1400. Its investigation period, which starts directly after the end of the Great Interregnum, on the one hand constitutes a formative phase for the king- and emperorship of the Empire and on the other hand, due to the mid-14th century pest pandemic, for the whole of society. Through a precise description and analysis of the construction of masculinit(ies) the study seeks to pave the way to a deeper understanding of the ruler’s status within the Late Medieval (gender) order.
